For successful business owners, investors and senior executives who wish to settle in Australia, the Australian Business Visa Program is an encouraging pathway towards conducting your business opportunities in Australia. There are major avenues for entry into Australia provided for below.
Business Innovation stream
This provisional visa is for people with business skills. It lets you operate a new or existing business in Australia.

- Bring eligible members of your family with you
- Apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) Business Innovation stream
Be nominated by one of the State Governments.
Be under 55 years of age, unless the nominating state or territory government certifies that the proposed business activity is of exceptional economic benefit.
For at least 2 out of 4 fiscal years before applying, you must have:
- Ownership in 1 or 2 businesses that had at least AUD 500,000 turn over
- Ownership rate must be:
– 51% if the business has a turnover of less than AUD400,000 per year
– 30% if the business has a turnover of AUD400,000 or more per year
– 10% if the business is operated by a publicly listed company
Have total net assets (including personal and business assets) worth AUD 800,000 and available for transfer to Australia within 2 years after the visa is granted.
All applicants who are over 18 years of age must have least functional English (I.e. IELTS 4.5 or equivalent). However, if this requirement is not met, the applicant must pay a second instalment of the visa application charge.
The application for this visa is based on a points test. Applicants must score at least 65 on the points test.

The applicant has been in Australia on subclass 188A visa for at least 12 months, within the 2 years prior to lodgement
Owned and operated a business in Australia for at least 2 years prior to the application with annual turnover of at least AUD300,000 for the 2 of last 4 years
Applicant and/or applicant’s partner must meet two of the following three criteria for the 12 months:
- Business Assets of at least AUD200,000
- Net personal and business assets of at least AUD600,000 in Australia
- Employed at least two Australian full-time employees in your business in Australia
Investor stream
This provisional visa requires you to invest at least AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory and maintain business or investment activity in Australia.
- Carry out business and investment activity in Australia
- Bring eligible members of your family with you
- Apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) Investor stream if certain requirements are met
The application for this visa is based on a points test. Applicants must score at least 65 on the point test.
The applicant has had business and personal net assets of at least AUD 2.25 million for the last 2 fiscal years
Be nominated by one of the State Governments.
Under 55 years of age, unless the nominating state or territory certifies that the applicant will make an exceptional economic benefit; and
The applicant must make an investment of AUD 1.5 million in Australian State or Territory bonds prior to grant of the visa, and keep it there for a period of 4 years
Have 3 years of experience either managing a qualifying business or “eligible investments”, and have showed a high level of management skill
For at least 1 of the 5 preceding years, you have either:
- Managed a business in which you hold a 10% shareholding; or
- Manage “eligible investments” of at least AUD 1.5 million, which can include
- Ownership interests in a business
- Cash on deposit
- Stocks or bonds
- Real estate
- Gold or bullion
- Loan to a business

The applicant has been in Australia on subclass 188A VISA for at least 2 years, within the 4 years prior to lodgement.
Maintained the investment in Australia State or Territory bonds for the last 4 years.
Significant Investor stream
This provisional visa is for people who invest at least AUD5 million in Australian investments that meet certain requirements and maintain investment activity in Australia.
- Carry out investment activity in Australia.
- Apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) Significant Investor stream if certain requirements are met.
Be nominated by one of the State Governments.
Be able to invest at least AUD 5 million in a “complying investment”. A “complying investment” for the purposes of the Significant Investor Visa must be made up of:
- At least $500,000 in venture capital and growth private equity funds which invest in start-ups and small private companies.
- At least $1.5 million in approved managed funds investing in emerging companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
- A ‘balancing investment’ of up to $3 million in managed funds that may invest in a range of assets, including ASX-listed companies, Australian corporate bonds or notes, annuities and commercial real estate.
All applicants who are over 18 years of age must have at least functional English (I.e. IELTS 4.5 or equivalent). However, if this requirement is not met, applicants pay a second instalment of the visa application charge.

The applicant needs to spend 40 days per year in Australia on Significant Investor visa for the last 4 years while holding 188 visa, and be nominated by a state or territory government to qualify for a permanent subclass 888 visa
Premium Investor stream
This provisional visa is for people who are nominated by Austrade and who invest at least AUD15 million in Australian investments and/or philanthropic contributions.
- carry out business and investment activity in Australia
- stay in Australia for up to 4 years and 3 months
- apply for a permanent Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) Premium Investor stream if certain requirements are met.
Be nominated by one of the State Governments.
Be able to invest at least AUD 15 million in a “complying investment”, including:
- Australian securities exchange listed assets
- Australian government or semi-government bonds or notes
- corporate bonds or notes issued by an Australian exchange listed entity (or wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian listed entity), investment grade rated Australian corporate bonds or notes rated by an AFS licenced debt rating agency
- Australian proprietary limited companies that operate qualifying businesses (providing goods or services to the public with a profit-making intention, and not passive or speculative in nature)
- real property in Australia excluding residential property
- deferred annuities issued by Australian registered life companies
- state or territory government approved philanthropic contribution

Significant Business History stream
This visa is for experienced business owners, to operate a new or existing business in Australia.Starting 1 July 2021,Business Talent visa Subclass 132 will no longer be available.
- Establish a new or develop an existing business in Australia
- Stay in Australia permanently
- Bring family members with you(spouse, children under 18 and dependent children under 23 before decision)
*The holders of a Business Talent (subclass132) visa will be subject to monitoring during their first 3 years in Australia. The visa holder will be asked to supply information and supporting documentation regarding their business interests in Australia.
Be nominated by a State Government.
Be under 55 years of age, unless the nominating state or territory government certifies that the proposed business activity is of exceptional economic benefit.
For at least 2 of the last 4 fiscal years you had:
- Net assets in business of at least AUD 400,000 or 10% ownership of the business if it is a public listed company
- The business had an annual turnover of at least AUD 3 million for the 2 of the last 4 fiscal years. This turnover can be combined from maximum 2 businesses.
Ownership of at least:
- 51%, if the business has a turnover of less than AUD 400,000 per year
- 30%, if the business has a turnover of AUD 400,000 or more per year
- 10%, if the business is a public listed company.
Have total net assets (including personal and business assets) worth AUD 1.5 million and available for transferring to Australia within 2 years after the visa is granted.

Venture Capital Entrepreneur stream
This visa is for people who have sourced venture capital funding from a member of the Australian Investment Council (AIC) (formerly known as the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL)). Starting 1 July 2021,Business Talent visa Subclass 132 will no longer be available.
- Establish a new or develop an existing business in Australia
- Stay in Australia permanently
- Bring family members with you(spouse, children under 18 and dependent children under 23 before decision)
*The holders of a Business Talent (subclass132) visa will be subject to monitoring during their first 3 years in Australia. The visa holder will be asked to supply information and supporting documentation regarding their business interests in Australia.
- Be nominated by s State government
- Secured at least AUD1 million in funding for a high-value business idea, and must enter into an enforceable agreement with an Australian venture capital firm for the funding. This venture capital firm must be a member of the Australian Investment council.
- Have functional English (IELT 4.5 with no band under 4; or equivalent)
- Nomination charge (Payable to State Government)
